Cigar excise tax

How cigar excise tax is calculated and applied to your order.

You may see an “Excise tax” line on your order. This is a tobacco tax required by your state, and it’s separate from sales tax.

What is excise tax?

Excise tax is a tax specifically on tobacco products. Many states charge it on cigars in addition to regular sales tax. The amount and the way it’s calculated vary by state, some charge a percentage, some a flat amount per cigar, and some cap the tax per cigar.

Why it appears on my order

Because cigar taxes depend on where your order is delivered, we calculate excise tax based on your “Ship to” state. If your state charges cigar excise tax, it shows as its own line in your order summary so you can see exactly what you’re paying.

Where you’ll see it

  • In your cart as an estimate.

  • At checkout, calculated for your specific address.

  • On your final order confirmation and receipt.

Good to know

  • Some states charge no cigar excise tax, in that case you won’t see the line.

  • Excise tax is set by the state, not by Madura.

  • If your order summary says “finalizing tax details,” we’re still confirming the exact amount. (See the article “Why does my order say finalizing tax details?”)
